For the majority of their childhood, our students spend a large portion of their day with their teachers. During this time, they are learning not only for academic achievement, but also to become active participants in society. This gives us the responsibility of educating them in a way that gives them the skills and necessary resources in order to make their own conscious decisions. We’re not giving them the answers to life, however, what we are doing is giving them the foundation to create themselves and the world around them. This kind of learning needs to be done in a place where the students feel comfortable and safe. We as educators also have a responsibility to foster our students’ education in a way that allows them to focus on their education and not worry about the multitude of issues that come with childhood and young adulthood. My classroom will serve as a safe space for students who may not have access to that. In doing so, I would also able to provide them with a place where their learning isn’t being disrupted. This would allow my students to have the capacity to do well while they are being challenged in the classroom. There would be more of a chance of them being actively engaged in the classroom and taking interest in their learning.
